writer, director, producer based in LA
Sophie Lee Bennett…
(Any pronouns) is a director, producer, and writer who has been published in several literary magazines and has written/directed two award winning short films.
Bennett was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but relocated to Seattle in high school. They graduated with a BFA from NYU Tisch Film & TV with a minor in producing.
Their writing aims to drop you in; subtext bleeding through the imagery and dialogue. This style ripples through all their work. From short films to short stories to plays to novels. Stories that interest her often reflect queerness, layered family dynamics, and nuanced portrayals of mental health regardless of the genre. The bottom line is dimensional characters and lived-in story arcs.
Their short story ‘No Smoeking’ was published in the 95th issue of 34th Parallel Literary Magazine and ‘Best’ was published in the July 2022 issue of Litro Magazine. She’s also written on projects such as the web series "Strings Attached" that won Best Web Series at Top Shorts Film Festival and Best Comedy Short at the Los Angeles Film Awards (LAFA). Their short experimental film "Transformations," which was picked as Best Experimental film at the Top Shorts Film Festival and screened at Wicked Queer Film Festival.
In 2022 her short film “A Neighborhood Away” screened at East Village Queer Film Festival and at New York Shorts Film Festival.
In 2024 they completed their proof of concept “Gummy Worms,” starring Lachlan Watson (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Y2K) and Emmett Preciado (She’s the He) along with a mostly non-binary/trans cast. The expansive desert landscape offers a world without gender. This film is currently in its festival run.
